I just discovered pictures of Green Frieda's chicken coop down in LA.
Wow, I'm so impressed. If we didn't already have our Eglu (which is more than enough for our hens), I'd be begging for Green Frieda's plans so I could try and build one for us up here in Redwood City.
Oh, and their two Rhode Island Red pullets (Jackie and Lisa) seem to like it, too.
Welcome to urban chicken farming, Green Frieda!
Now to find some urban chickens in San Diego and Sacramento...

Hi again!! It's us, the South Portland, Maine chicken activists from last summer.
Just wanted to ask perhaps for your help! Olivia (11) entered a national contest with her video reviewing Gail Damerow's YOUR CHICKENS, A KIDS GUIDE. She was chosen as a finalist and now the winner is being chosen by a live, on-line vote. The winner receives $500 in books plus $1000 in book for their local library (she wants to give it to her school library which just lost massive funding.)
If you like, check out the video and vote at http://www.storytubes.info. You can vote once a day until the polls close on Wednesday night. Tell all your friends, too! Go chickens!!
Thank you,
Stacey & Olivia
(I tried posting this on the other post but got an error message: my apoligies if it comes through twice!)
Thanks for the coop shout-out! I have really enjoyed reading your blog, particularly all your first-time chicken owner posts. I'll be sure to let you know when the green roof on the coop is complete. It's in the works right now.
HI! I'm a chicken Newbie. I've been researching them for a while but took the plunge yesterday as the HMB Feed & Fuel had all 3 varieties I wanted. We've got the temporary brooder set up. I've vacillated between purchasing an Eglu or building a coop as a summer project. And now I have to decide pretty quick here. My question for you is, based off your experience do you think the Eglu is big enough for 3 chickens (Omlet says 4 medium)? A Buff Orpington, a Barred Rock, and a Americauna. Too bad the Eglu Cube isn't sold in the US yet. That looks great!
Thanks for a great website...you have a ton of great information here....and it's nice to look at what someone else has experienced raising chickens here in the Bay Area.
Best Wishes!
Kim
Hi Kim, glad you're getting into the urban chicken thing! To answer your question: yes, the Eglu can hold three full-sized chickens easily. Our two girls have plenty of room to spare, and I could easily see adding a third chicken (if my wife would let me).
Happy to answer any other questions you may have, and I look forward to hearing about your own adventures raising chickens.
I am living in san diego and am very interested in having a chicken. I have a few questions.
1) do the neighbors complain?
2) do you have to have more than one (are they social)
3) how hard are they to clean up after?
4) do they smell?
Hi Saanon, Answers to your questions:
1. With the exception of a single neighbor, there are no complaints (they like our chickens almost as much as we do!).
2. Yes, they're social, and you'd be wise to get no fewer than two chicken (not much harder to raise than a single chicken)
3. It takes 5 minutes a day to feed, water and clean up after them. If you've ever taken care of a cat, chickens are easier to clean up after than a cat (imho).
4. Only if you neglect your chickens by not cleaning up after them will they smell. It'd take A LOT of neglect or A LOT of chickens for the smell to get bad. With just a couple chickens, you can easily stay on top of cleaning up.
Hello - I just found your blog via Google. I'm interested in keeping chickens in Sacramento - and/or working to change our zoning laws regarding chickens. Do you know of anyone who is working on this?
Thanks!
Kelly
Hi folks,
Love all the different styles of coops!
Just wanted to let you know that I loved the mypetchicken.com website so much that I decided to start my own chicken advocacy and customer coop website here in Sacramento CA.
The positive response has been extraordinary!
Although chickens are not legal (yet) for residence the city of Sacramento, they are in many cases in the county and surrounding areas.
Best of Luck
Bob
